Journey across highway 7

Driving from Ottawa to Ennismore down highway 7, you see many little restaurants and wonder is there a gem somewhere here?

This is my review of some of the restaurants along the way.

1. Spud Box in Kaladar
Don’t get too excited about the signage…it is just a chip truck. We ordered poutine and the philly cheese steak. The meals were not extra special…the philly cheese steak was messy with gravy and green peppers and gravy. The cheese was the curds that was also used for the poutine. The cheese was melted by the heat of the gravy and the veggies and meat. I found that the price for the sandwich was pretty expensive 10 dollars without any fries. Poutine was not as good as ones I’ve had elsewhere…curds were NOT squeaky.

2. Amazing Coffee in Madoc 2 blocks south on 62
An indie coffee shop just off of highway 7. If you are hankering for a cap or latte; this is one of the stops to make. Just changed ownership so some of the baristas are just learning but still a better cup that the Bunn coffee or Timmies. The tea is a selection of Mighty Leaf teas. They also offer paninis and some squares.
Open late until 9 on Friday and Saturday and only until 5 on Sunday.

3. Madoc Dairy Bar
Offers breakfast until 11AM. Diner food that uses real butter. I like this breakfast better than cup of Joe’s as I like the ingredients used better.

4. Cup of Joe in Marmora
Diner offering all day breakfast. Breakfast is very hearty for the price. I would stick to the traditional bacon or sausage breakfast which came with toast and pan fried potatoes. For 5.50 it included tea (black or green Liptons)/Bunn coffee and 4 sausages.

5. Hamblin’s Restaurant in Lakefield
We only stop here for the ice cream parlour. It has 55 flavours of ice cream. Be sure to get the Karwartha Ice Cream. The single is 2 scoops! 3 singles is 10 dollars.

6. Coffee at Silver Lake
The restaurant is only open for lunch and dinner. I had a peek…looks like a higher end restaurant.
The little coffee shop beside the restaurant offers organic coffee/espresso etc. They offer breakfast sandwiches made from organic eggs, double smoked bacon and local cheese on either bagel or english muffin.
